FINA 5801 - Investment Banking: Home

About this guide

This guide was written for Jeff Germanotta's fall 2019 course, Investment Banking (FINA 4801-5801).

How to use the guide:

Use the guide table of contents in the left margin to get to pages with instructions for the sections of your project.

Below are:

Off campus access methods (authentication)

  • Library Login:  This method (a proxy server) is quick and easy, and requires no setup.  But a few databases will not work with it, and it is less reliable when there is heavy internet traffic or a slow connection.
  • VPN (virtual private network): The VPN requires you to download an app onto both your cell phone and your computer.  It is much more reliable during times of heavy internet traffic, and is well worth the necessary setup time. Outline of the steps required for the VPN:
    1. Find detailed VPN instructions here. Once there, click on "How do I start using GlobalProtect VPN and Duo?"
    2. Register for Duo Mobile. Two ways to do that: via an email from ITS (helpdesk@marquette.edu; you can email and ask for "the VPN registration invitation email"); or via Office365.
    3. Download the Duo Mobile app onto your cell phone. Make sure you allow push notifications for it.
    4. Download the GlobalProtect app onto your computer.

Although the detailed instructions page refers you to Information Technology Services for help, at the Raynor Information Desk we can also help with some parts of the process.  Give us a call at (414) 288-7556.

Resource list for the PIB (Public Information Book)

In compiling your PIB, below is a simple list of the resources you can use -- no instructions here, just a list!  See the following sections/pages for notes ...

Spend lots of time on WESCO's own webpages of course!

Important Notes about Thomson ONE

This database will be useful for several parts of the project. But there are requirements and limitations when using it!  Please read these notes ...

Requirements and limitations:

  • For off campus use, Thomson ONE categorically requires the VPN.
  • Number of users:  Thomson ONE only allows 20 simultaneous users!  If you are working during a high traffic time, you may not get access.
  • Supported browsers:  Thomson ONE requires the browser Internet Explorer (IE), the older MicroSoft browser. It will not work with Safari or Edge (the current MicroSoft browser). All Windows computers still have IE, but you have search for it.
    • It can work on Macs, but only if you have a partitioned hard drive and can also run Windows and IE!
    • It can work with Chrome and Firefox, but only if you have an add-on such as IE Tab that can emulate IE.
(IE Tab for Firefox; IE Tab for Chrome)

Below is the top menu bar for Thomson ONE. Please get to know it, especially the light-blue middle part ...

Thomson ONE main menu

  • Company Views menu:  use for single company lookups and data retrievals
  • Screening & Analysis menu: use for searching (screening) based on broader criteria and for retrieving data on multiple companies.  (For example, you can screen on criteria such as an industry code, minimum sales/revenue, EPS and other ratios, etc.)
