The Crusades

The Crusades were a series of holy wars undertaken by Christian Europeans in various parts of the Middle East, North Africa, and Southern Europe from the 11th to 13th centuries.  Whether waged against Christian heretics or Muslims, "crusade" has become a blanket term for the many wars fought during the Middle Ages with religious justifications.
