Database registrations: FactSet

Web version versus Desktop app

Web version only supported!

The Libraries are supporting the web version only. Faculty may download/install the desktop app (called the 'Installed' version), but we are only working with the web version.

Excel Add-in:

The Excel add-in only works with the installed (desktop) version of FactSet.

FactSet login

Already registered? Click below.

  1. Enter your Marquette email address.  Faculty may enter either their Marquette email address or their FactSet.net ID, both will work.
  2. Then you will go through the Marquette University Single Sign-On portal, where you login using your university account/password.

FactSet account registration

Individual accounts are required for FactSet!

There are two types of FactSet accounts, web access and desktop (aka installed). Your status at Marquette (student vs. faculty) and the academic program you're in will primarily determine which account type you may have.

AIM program students:

AIM students should NOT use the self-registration form here. AIM students will be given FactSet accounts at the beginning of their first official AIIM class. Late admissions (not during fall semester) should write an email to AIM @ marquette.edu to request an account that includes the installed (desktop) version.

Other students and faculty:

Other students and faculty may request FactSet accounts/IDs using the request form below.

Please note that your account request will take up to 7-10 full business days to process.  (Faculty accounts take longer.)  You will only be able to login when FactSet sends you a welcome email from 'factset.net-admin'

Faculty only:

For faculty only, the welcome email will include your FactSet.net ID and a link to download the desktop app. Please be aware that the installed version (desktop app) is only compatible with Windows or a Windows Parallel on Macs.

Notes for students:

  1. You must explain that you're planning to use FactSet only for educational purposes.
  2. You must provide your expected date of graduation.
  3. Be aware that FactSet explicitly prohibits the use of your account for internship work.
  4. This self-registration account request defaults to FactSet's web access version only.

Faster access:

If you need an account sooner than this automated self-registration request process allows, please email memref @ marquette.edu with your name, email, expected date of graduation, and the specific reason why you need expedited access.  The librarian FactSet administrator will work on your request as time permits

After account registration

7-10 business days waiting period:

After completing the account request, FactSet will process your request within 7-10 business days.  Student accounts seem to take less time than that; faculty accounts can take the longer time period.

You will receive two emails from FactSet: an email acknowledgement of your request and a welcome to FactSet email.  (See screenshots below.)  You MUST wait until you receive the second email from FactSet ('factset.net-admin') to complete your account setup.  Faculty, this second email will include your FactSet.net ID.

1st login:

From the FactSet welcome email, click on the Login link.  That will bring you to the screen pictured below. Look in the right margin and click on the link "Create password for new account":

FactSet will send you more emails:

  1. An email containing a one-time verification code: this will allow you to complete the form for creating your password.
    Notes:
    • The code is only valid for 15 minutes, so start this process when you have the time to complete it!
    • The password you create has no connection to your Marquette credentials!
  2. An email notice that you've created your FactSet password and one that your account was used on a new device.

Password requirements:

  • Minimum of eight (8) characters
  • Must include three of the following:  an uppercase letter, a lowercase letter, a number, and a special character

Account setup

The Account setup menu takes you through a series of steps.  Here's a screenshot of the initial menu:

FactSet account setup process; includes video overview of platform; account settings, display settings, research settings and more.

Setup process steps:

  1. Welcome video:  provides a brief overview of the platform. You can skip it by clicking on Next or Account. (It's 6 minutes long.)
  2. Account:  most of these settings are either pre-filled for you or self-explanatory.  The one setting where a suggestion may be useful is the Industry Classification System you set as your default.  More about that below.
  3. Display settings:  choose a light or dark theme; spacing and font size; and streaming data colors.
  4. Create watchlist:  although FactSet strongly discourages you from skipping this, you CAN skip it!
  5. Get Started: here FactSet saves your preferences and moves you onto the platform.
➤ On first viewing, there will be a screen overlay with brief descriptions of parts of the display.  Click at the bottom of the screen to dismiss the overlay.

Industry classification systems

Industry classification system:

This is the one area of the account settings where a recommendation may be helpful!  The following industry codes are available in FactSet:

Industry Classification Systems in FactSet
FactSet Revere RBICS Russell (ICB)
FTSE and FTSE JSE STOXX
GICS - Multi-Sourced, and MSCI-S&P GICS - Direct TRBC
Recommendation:

Consider making GICS - Multi-Sourced your default.  Why?  Because this classification system is frequently used in the investment community.

About other industry classification systems:
  • TRBC is also used in Workspace (from LSEG).
  • RBICS from FactSet Revere is also used in Mergent Online's Supply Chain module.

More information about some of these industry classification systems (and others) available here.
