ebooks explained: Adobe Digital Editions

Do I really need this software?

To "Check out" an ebook, you DO need Adobe Digital Editions.  Checking out the ebook means that you are reserving the use of the ebook for yourself alone for a certain period of time.  It is most useful in the following circumstances:

  • You want to download the book.
  • You want to read the ebook offline.
  • There is a limited number of users permitted for the book, i.e. only a 1-user or 3-user license for the ebook.
Things to know:

In order to check out an ebook, you must first:

  1. Have Adobe Digital Editions installed on your computer.
  2. Have created an individual account in the ebook platform, Ebsco or ProQuest.  (This individual account is not connected to your Marquette email/password.)

Authorizing your computer:

After installing Adobe Digital Editions, you must "authorize your computer" or device. If the installation process does not automatically prompt you to do this, go to the Help menu and select "Authorize computer".

Two ways to authorize your computer:
  1. With an Adobe ID:  an Adobe ID will allow you to use the software on other devices.
  2. Without an Adobe ID:  this means that you will only use the software on this specific device.
