Find Books

For additional suggestions on finding relevant books see "Books" tab in this Research Guide.  Here are a few extra tips.

Find books about particular individuals by entering their name in the search window of MarqCat Plus, which is the default setting when you go to the Library's homepage.  Be sure to look at the full bibliographic entries for about the first five items.  Note the Subject Headings entered for each one, since they can lead you to relevant topics in the person's life.  If you do this for Popu Urban II, for example, you will find that the Council of Melfi was important in his life.  To find primary sources about individuals just add the word sources to the search, like this:  Pope Urban II sources.

Find primary sources about particular countries use the Advanced Keyword Screen at the bottom of this column and follow these instructions:

1.  Click on the dropdown arrow to the left of the first search window and select Subject Heading.

2.  Enter the following in the first window:  france [or any other country] and sources.  Sources is a Library of Congress subject heading for primary sources.  Be sure to include and.

3.  In the second search window, which should still be marked Any Field, enter the following:  medieval or "middle ages."  You use quotes to insure that you get those two words adjacent to each other and in that order.

4.  Click on Submit.
