Downloading Portions of EBSCO EBOOKS

Below is an example of an EBSCO ebook record found in the Marqcat Plus catalog:

ebsco ebook record

When you click on the Online Access link, you will get the book’s online catalog record which provides more information about the book:

On the above record near the bottom it will list number of users allowed at the same time; in this instance it is Unlimited User Access.

Also, included are the publisher permissions (many of the books have Digital Resource Media protections that may only allow you to print/email/save a certain number of pages usually between 40 - 100 pages of the book.)  In the case of the record above, the limit is 100 pages.

However, it also shows that you are allowed to copy and paste portions of the book.  Note:  if you paste the text in Microsoft Word, be sure to choose the Keep Text Only option in order for the text to retain its format and spacing.

In some cases EPUB may be a  better format choice over PDF as EPUB automatically resizes to fit your screen and you can adjust the font size.

Click here for more information regarding the differences between PDF format and EPUB formats.

Once you download the pages/chapters, you DO NOT need to be online to read them.  They will be files on your computer to keep.

Note Taking:  while you are reading an EBSCO ebook online and you are logged into your free EBSCO account, it is possible to take notes.  The notes that you write will not be saved with the ebook text, but you can save them in a folder in your personal EBSCO account.  Click here to find out more about note taking in EBSCO books.

Download Full Text of EBSCO Ebooks

Full Download of EBSCO ebooks

Some EBSCO ebooks will allow you to download the book in its entirety.  Please note:  although the ebook will be downloaded to your machine, it will only be temporary – the checkout period for EBSCO ebooks can be between 1-7 days.

If there is a Full Download icon undefined  ebook’s record, then you are able to download the full book.  However to do so you MUST log into your personal EBSCO account and ALSO  have the free program, Adobe Digital Editions downloaded and installed on your machine. (Note:  this is NOT the same software as the Adobe Acrobat Reader.)

When you click the Download Full Text link, the book will be opened in the Adobe Digital Editions software.  An advantage to downloading the entire ebook is that you are able to access the entire work while being off-line

However, if you only need a limited number of pages or chapters, it is easier to download them while reading the book online – the advantages being that you will be downloading PDF/EPUB files which are yours to keep (you could read these on or offline), you do not have to create or sign into a personal EBSCO ebook account AND you do NOT need to have the Adobe Digital Editions software downloaded and installed  on your machine.

Please note:  although it is possible to download the full EBSCO ebook, please note that in Adobe Digital Edtions, you are NOT able to download, print or email pages/chapters from the fully downloaded book.  You are only able to view the whole book (online or offline), search for keywords in the text, bookmark pages, and change the text size.

Although it is possible to take notes and highlight text while reading a downloaded EBSCO ebook in Adobe Digital Editions, please note:  the notes and highlighting will be erased after the ebook’s checkout period has ended

When you download the full book, you will also have a choice as to how many days the book can be checked out to you.  The time period for EBSCO ebooks is between 1-7 days.  After the checkout period has passed, the book will no longer work on your machine and you would then delete the record from the Adobe Digital Editions software.    For many of the EBSCO ebooks, you can check them out again.

How to close and release an EBSCO ebook

If an Ebsco ebook is open on one PC, it cannot be opened on another. Closing browser tab/window doesn’t release the title. The browser ‘back’ button or other browser commands don't release it. If the book isn't closed properly, it is in use for the default timeout of 30 minutes.

To close an EBSCO ebook, click on any of these actions:

  • Detailed Record
  • New Search
  • Return to Results

This does not apply to Ebsco subscription titles or titles with unlimited user licenses.
