Census Maps

The Census Bureau is a government organization that serves as the leading source of quality data about the nation's people and economy. Census information is gathered at the federal, state, and at a local level and can be used for many research and personal information needs. The following data are collected:

Population & housing census- every 10 years

Economic Census- every 5 years

American community survey- annually

Our many surveys- both demographic & economic

Economic indicators- each indicator released on a specific schedule, see the
Economic Indicator Calendar

Some uses for Census information would be:

To determine the distribution of Congressional seats to states

To make decisions about community services such as:
           - provide services for the elderly
          - where to build new roads and schools
          - or where to locate job training centers

Researching family history or a historical topic

Find the population, demographics of a particular area and location during a particular time period

Example:

So, say I was writing a grant for a local non-profit in Milwaukee to provide services for the elderly. I could use the Census data to find out the average age of the population of the area, income, type of housing, race demographics, computer ownership, and other types of data collected. These statistics and numbers would give me information to write a stronger argument for the grant.
