What is a Mash-up?
In web development, "A web mash up is a web page or application that combines data from two
or more external online sources. The external sources are typically
other web sites and their data may be obtained by the mash up developer
in various ways including, but not limited to: APIs, XML feeds, and
screen-scraping"
Cited from: (http://www.programmableweb.com/faq
An example of a mash up is the use of cartographic data from Google Maps to add location information to real estate data, thereby creating a new and distinct Web service that was not originally provided by either source. Another example would be adding bus times and locations to the Google Maps within Milwaukee County.
Other Map Mash-ups:
- HousingMaps.com uses data from Craigslist and Google Maps to create a visual for searching for houses, rentals,, rooms and sublets
- AlertMap combines data from over 200 sources related to severe weather conditions, bio-hazard threats, and seismic information, and displays them on a map of the world.
