Marqcat Records into RefWorks             Print Page

How do I Import Records from Marqcat into my RefWorks Account?

Importing/Exporting MARQCAT Records into

Your RefWorks Bibliography

EXPORTING FROM MARQCAT

You can select the MARQCAT records you want to save and export to RefWorks by using the checkbox in the column headed Mark to the left of the titles you want to save and export.

[Note: You MUST click the Save Marked Records button on that page before you go to the next page or the titles you've just marked will be lost.]

In MARQCAT, after you have marked all the records you want to export, click on the button Export Saved Records. Format of List should be "Full Display" and Send List to should be "Local Disk."

Click the Submit button on the popup screen click Save.

Select the location where you want to save the file (Desktop, My Documents, A:\, etc.). By default the file name will be "export" and the file type will be Text Document. Name your file so you can differentiate it and leave the type "Text Document" as it is.

IMPORTING TO REFWORKS

• Open your RefWorks account. [If you haven't created one yet, you can do it by clicking on the RefWorks link in the Library Services list on the library home page (www.marquette.edu/library/.]

• Move your cursor to the References button on the upper left hand side of screen. From the pulldown menu, click on the Import button.

• For the "Import Filter/Data Source ," use the pulldown menu to select Innovative Interfaces INNOPAC.

• For the "Database" select Marquette University (Full Display).

• Now you can specify the folder where you want your records to be placed. If you've not yet created the folder for these references, you can do it by clicking on Folders near the top and then clicking on Create New Folder.

[Note: RefWorks also uses a "Last Imported" folder to temporarily store what you import, but those records are overwritten when you import new records.] If you've already created a folder to store the records you're importing, you can select it from the pull down menu.

• For "Import Data from the following Text File" use the Browse button to find your file where you had saved it.

• The "Encoding" option – if you are importing English language, keep the default setting at ANSI – Latin 1. However, if your records contain foreign-language text containing accent marks, umlauts, etc., then you will need to change this setting to: UTF-8.

Click on the Import button near the bottom of the window.

• If you've imported successfully you'll see a message "Import completed – x number of references imported" to show how many records have been imported.

• Just to make sure, check your folder to be sure the records were placed there.

Note: The records will also be in RefWorks' "Last Imported" folder. If the records do not appear in your intended folder, you can move them from the "Last Imported" folder to the folder of your choice. To do so, move your cursor to the Folders button at the top of the RefWorks screen. From the submenu, click on the Organize Folders button. From the list of folders click on the references for "Last Imported" folder. To move the records, click on the radio button for "All in List" (located above the first record in the folder) and use the "Put in Folder ..." pull down menu to place the records in the folder of your choice.

You have now successfully imported your selected MARQCAT records into your RefWorks web bibliography account where you are now able to create bibliographies in a variety of citation styles.
