Durable Links: Using DOI Numbers

Article Links That Last for D2L, Wikis, etc.

DOI Numbers

Graphic depicting a DOI keyboard buttonNot all databases provide permanent links to articles.  They may however, include DOI numbers in the article records that provide a unique, persistent link to internet content.  They include a prefix and a suffix, separated by a slash, and always begin with the number 10, for example, 10.1000/123456

The example below provides instructions on finding DOI numbers in Sage Journals Online and modifying them for off-campus access.

Other databases and eJournals also provide a DOI number, often on the first page of the journal article or listed with the article citation in the database or journal's table of contents.  These include:

  • Web of Science
  • Science Direct
  • Oxford University Press
  • Wiley
  • Springer
  • Emerald
