Graduate Student's Guide to Libraries: Library Basics

This guide outlines services and resources for graduate students in all disciplines

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a library card?

Your MUID is your ticket to Raynor Memorial Libraries' services. Use it to enter the Raynor turnstiles; check out books and other library materials; print materials at any PrintWise station in the library, and to log in to e-resources from off campus by using your Marqnet username and password. Click here for more information about borrowing.

Can I use library resources from home?

MARQCAT, the online catalog, is always accessible 24/7. Most licensed electronic resources are available from off campus by easy logon using your MarqNet credentials. A few resources may be accessible from the libraries only or may require the use of the University's Virtual Private Network (VPN) software to authenticate MU members from off campus. Click here for IT's VPN instructions.

Can I obtain books or articles not owned by Marquette?

Yes! Students can obtain materials that the libraries do not own through ILLiad, the Interlibrary Loan service. Register for an ILLiad account, provide complete citations for needed materials, and they will be delivered free of charge from our local, state, and national partners. Articles are delivered digitally when possible. Click here for more information about Interlibrary Loan.

Is there a place I can work with a group?

The library has 17 group study rooms available for student use. Some of the rooms can be reserved; some are only available on a first-come, first-served basis. A group may use any empty room if it is not reserved. These group study rooms are a shared resource. We ask that you be considerate of others and help us to ensure equitable access to these spaces for all members of the university community. Reservations can be made in-person at the Raynor Circulation Desk or by phone at (414) 288-7555. Click here for more information about group study rooms.

Does Raynor Library have any equipment or software for student digital projects?

Yes! The Digital Scholarship Lab, located near the Information Desk on the 1st floor, supports digital media production by providing equipment (iPads, video cameras, audio recorders, digital cameras), work space, editing software, and assistance.

Are there printers and photocopiers available for student use in the libraries?

Yes! There are 11 copier/printers in the Raynor Memorial buildings, including two color copier/printers. These copier/printers are designed to provide decent copies of class notes, Class Reserve material, and periodical articles (if "perfect" copies are required, a commercial photocopier/printer is recommended). All of the photocopier/printers use the Marquette Cash account on a Marquette ID or Marquette Courtesy Card. The cost per copy is 7 cents each for monochrome (black/white) copies/prints and 50 cents for color copies/prints. Click here for more information about printers/photocopiers in the libraries.

Can I get materials from the libraries if I'm dissertating in another state or placed in an internship?

Yes. The Libraries extend Marquette University library services to currently registered Marquette students who are dissertating out of state or on internships or other placements. Graduate students who are taking on-campus courses are not eligible for this program. For more information or to apply, click here.

Is there anyone who can help me with my writing?

The Ott Writing Center, located on the 2nd level of Raynor Library (R240), welcomes all members of the campus community, from first-year students to grad students and faculty. The Writing Center is administered by the English Department; hours and much more are at the Center's website, or call 288-5542.

I Can't Study Without Coffee!

Beverages are allowed in the libraries as long as they are in covered, spill-proof containers. During the semesters, bring your commuter mug and visit Brew @ the Bridge for coffee, tea, other beverages, snacks and prepackaged meal options such as fruit, sandwiches, salads, sushi, and bagels.  Sunday through Thursday until 10:00 p.m. Food is allowed on the Bridge but please, no eating in the other areas of the Libraries.

Attention Grantseekers

Raynor Library houses a Funding Information Center (FIC), located on the first floor. The Center is a starting place for information on foundation grants, fundraising, scholarships, and other grants to individuals. See the FIC website for more about the resources. Noteworthy online directories include:

Graduate Students seeking funding for research should work through Marquette's Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.

Quiet Workspace

There are a limited number of research carrels in Memorial Library that may be assigned to graduate students who are conducting advanced research. For more information and a link to the application:
