Find Books

For detailed suggestions on finding relevant books see "Books" tab in this Research Guide.  See also the special Europe Web Sites page by clicking on the drop down arrow to the right of Europe on this tab.  Here are a few extra tips.

Try browsing in the stacks in Memorial Library.  Use the Library of Congress's Classification Outline to tell you the appropriate call number ranges.  For example, books on "France, Revolutionary and Napoleonic period, 1789-1815" have call numbers beginning with DC139 to DC249.  Find these books in Memorial Library using this chart to Book Locations.

Don't forget that the name of any country is an official Library of Congress subject heading.  That means that you can do a Subject search in MARQCAT on the name of any country.  Combine the country's name with one of the following four categories, as in germany social life and customs or france history:

history
politics and government
social life and customs
foreign relations

History is a narrower term for the Library of Congress than it is for most historians.  It tends to be wars and revolutions.  There is only a modest overlap among these categories.
