Find Books
For detailed suggestions on finding relevant books see "Books" tab in this Research Guide. Here are a few extra tips.
Try browsing in the stacks in Memorial Library. Use the Library of Congress's Classification Outline to tell you the appropriate call number ranges. For example, books on Korea have call numbers beginning with DS901 to DS937. Find these books in Memorial Library using this chart to Book Locations.
Don't forget that the name of any country is an official Library of Congress subject heading. That means that you can do a Subject search in MARQCAT on the name of any country. Combine the country's name with one of the following four categories, as in japan social life and customs or china history:
history
politics and government
social life and customs
foreign relations
History is a narrower term for the Library of Congress than it is for most historians. It tends to be wars and revolutions. There is only a modest overlap among these categories.
Find Articles
Start with Historical Abstracts. See also the special Asia Web Sites page by clicking on the drop down arrow to the right of Asia on this tab. For more detailed suggestions see the "Articles" tab in this Research Guide.

The library has two huge sets of primary sources on China and Japan: China Through Western Eyes and Japan Through Western Eyes. Both are on microfilm. Do a Title search in MARQCAT to learn more about these resources. You will get several hits on each title; use the one marked guide. This bibliographic entry will link you to online descriptions of the microfilm.
AHA Guide
The AHA Guide to Historical Literature will get you started on any time period anywhere in the world. The link is to both online and print versions.
