These are the top choices for scholarly critical articles:

Literature Online (LION)  From LION's opening screen, select "Criticism and Reference;" from the next screen select "Criticism."

  •       Subject is the best starting place=literary author, e.g. Coetzee, J. M. or the title of a work, e.g. House Made of Dawn
  •       Results may be narrowed using keywords pertinent to the topic
  •       Check MARQCAT for journals not contained in LION
  •       Citations to essays contained in books, need to check book's title in MARQCAT
  •       On results page: items may be marked for easy printing or e-mailing

Literary Reference Center Contains biography, interviews, book reviews, etc. for authors from antiquity to the present day.

  • Use tabs in result list to narrow to biography, criticism, interviews, periodicals.
  • Consider the quality of each citation; not all are scholarly journals

Finding Author Biographies

Try Literature Online first for a brief, signed and authoritative biography from a literary viewpoint.

Book Reviews

Literary Reference Center (use the "Reviews" tab); consider the type of periodical cited as many are very brief reviews, written for libraries.

To broaden the scope of review media, use ProQuest Research Library and Academic Search Complete

Lexis-Nexis Academic is a good source of international perspectives, including reviews, author interviews, publishing news, etc. for contemporary authors (c. 1980s to present). Use the "Search the News" column and set "source type" to "Major World Publications"

The New York Times includes a searchable archive of review back to 1981.
