  • What is Write N Cite?

Write N Cite is a plugin for Windows users of Microsoft Word 365 or Word 2016 which allows you run a simplified version of RefWorks inside of Word, enabling you to access and cite your references while working in Word, even if you are currently offline.  You are able to use Write N Cite to create bibliographies/list of references as well.

  • What is RefWorks CItation Manager?

An alternative to Write N Cite for Windows users is RefWorks Citation Manager.   This plug in also works with Microsoft Word 365 or Word 2016 and allows you to run a simplified version of RefWorks inside of Word, enabling you to access and cite your references while working in Word.  Click here to learn more about RefWorks Citation Manager.

Mac Users with 365 MS Office or Office 2016

What is RefWorks Citation Manager?

Mac users with Microsoft Office 365 or MS Word 2016 CANNOT use Write N Cite but instead can use  the RefWorks Citation Manager which is a free downloadable add-in that you download from within MS Word 2016.    Click here for information regarding Window's Reference Citation Management.  

For both  Windows and Mac's 2016 Word and 365 Office users, another option is to use One Line / Cite View (also known as Quick Cite.)   This  is an alternative method  if you are not able to or wish not to use the above programs..  This contains more steps in creating cited references and bibliographies but would work.    

Quick Cite for both Windows and Mac Users

If you do not wish or cannot use Write N Cite or Reference Citation Manager, another option for  both  Windows and Mac's 2016 Word and 365 Office users would be to use the Quick Cite method.  This contains more steps but does work in creating in-text citations and bibliographies.  However, please note:  this method does not work well if you are using a citation style that has numbering  such as AMA.  Also, it does not work at for citation styles that require footnotes such as the  Chicago Manual of Style (humanities version), )   For these type of citation styles RefWorks recommends that you use Write N Cite or Reference Citation Manager instead.
